About Us

The St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies is home to over two dozen student clubs and organizations. Each entity has different mandates, which contributes to the students’ experience on campus. The History Society was formally launched ten years ago to bring students, faculty members, and other interested parties inside and outside the discipline of history, to collaborate, share and connect. Throughout its existence the Society has done much to enrich students’ participation on campus. Various events and occasions are held to bring a tangible aspect to the routine academic lectures. Additionally, the society is both an avenue and forum for student ascension and expression.

Prior to the Society’s formation, an ad hoc group existed that allowed students within the discipline to come together and share ideas. This was in existence since the 1980s but very little is known thus far. In 2000, Dr. Brinsley Smaroo became head of the Department of History and welcomed the formation of the Society. Thence, the Society became fully engaged in various activities and events. Throughout its existence the Society has had a number of milestones one being in 2007 with the commemoration of the ending of the African slave trade and in 2010 with the coming on stream of its bi-monthly journal The R-Evolutionary.
